2. Definitions (Covered Veteran Categories)

For purposes of this policy:

This definition includes, but is not limited to, the following categories:

Disabled Veteran

Recently Separated Veteran
A veteran who served on active-duty in the ground, air, or naval service of the United States, and was discharged or released within the three-year (3) period beginning on the date of discharge or release from active-duty.

Active Duty Wartime or Campaign Badge Veteran
A veteran who served on active-duty in the ground, air, or naval service of the United States during a war or in a campaign or an expedition for which a service medal, a campaign badge, or an expeditionary medal was authorized.

Armed Forces Service Medal Veteran
A veteran who served on active-duty in the ground, air, or naval service of the United States, and participated in a qualifying U.S. military operation for which an Armed Forces Service Medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

These categories are intended to track the veteran classifications used in VEVRAA and related regulations (41 C.F.R. § 60-300.2).
